Top destinations for boating holidays

In the deep of winter, it’s easy to start dreaming of escaping the everyday and embarking on an adventure. And what better way to do that than by boat?

Whether you’re seeking the tranquillity of the Norfolk Broads or the excitement of the Greek Islands, a boating holiday offers a unique sense of freedom and exploration. Before you set off, it’s always a good idea to review your boat insurance to ensure you have sufficient cover for whichever of these fine destinations you choose.

The Norfolk Broads

This network of rivers and lakes in East Anglia is perfect for a relaxing break. Spend your time sitting back and spotting birds, trying your hand at fishing, or giving paddleboarding or another water sport a go.

Take your time to explore the Broads in depth, stopping off at charming villages like Horning and their historic pubs along the way. Alternatively, you could pack a picnic and enjoy the peaceful surroundings in your own secluded spot.

The Scottish Highlands

If you’re looking for dramatic scenery and a sense of adventure, head to the Scottish Highlands. The Caledonian Canal is a stunning 60-mile route through lochs and mountains, with plenty of opportunities for hiking, kayaking and fishing.

Moor up at Fort Augustus and take a walk to see the impressive staircase of five locks. You can even try to spot the Loch Ness Monster! Don’t forget to pack your waterproofs, as the weather in the Highlands can be unpredictable at the best of times.

The French Riviera

For a taste of glamour, the French Riviera is hard to beat. This part of southern France is renowned for its beautiful beaches, luxurious villas and chic towns. Cruise along the coast and make the most of stops in Antibes, Villefranche-sur-Mer, Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat and Eze.

This area is a hub of fine dining and designer shopping, so you’re sure to have plenty of fun while soaking up the sun in this playground of the rich and famous.

The Dalmatian Coast

With 79 islands and no fewer than 500 islets, Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast has plenty to discover. Moor up and go for a dip where the azure waters lap against secluded coves, then venture into one of the many ancient towns for fresh seafood in a waterfront restaurant.

Dubrovnik is a must-see destination, but you’ll need to prepare for big crowds given its surge in popularity since featuring as the city of King’s Landing in the hit TV show Game of Thrones. You can also go to Split and visit the Diocletian’s Palace, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Greek Islands

There’s something for everyone in this part of the world, from bustling nightlife to tranquil beaches.

When you island hop around the Cyclades, you can see the iconic blue-domed churches of Santorini, experience the legendary nightlife of Mykonos, and marvel at the ancient ruins and charming villages of Naxos.

The Amalfi Coast

This breathtakingly beautiful stretch of coastline in southern Italy is known for its pastel-coloured buildings clinging to the rugged cliffs. Head to Bomerano and go for a memorable hike along the Path of the Gods, finishing up in Positano with a cool limoncello.

The town of Amalfi boasts some of the best restaurants around, with Hotel Santa Caterina serving up the best local ingredients on a terrace overlooking the Mediterranean. You can also make a trip over to the island of Capri and visit the famous Blue Grotto, a sea cave with luminous blue water.
