Why Ebooks?
Travel guides and travel literature are notoriously fickle and relatively small niches in the publishing world. Books about a woman traveling solo in Italy do fantastically well, especially if she falls in love, whereas a tale of someone crossing Mongolia on foot might not even find shelf space. Compared to commercial fiction, travel is so small that it’s hard to justify printing the books. So most publishers do not.
We know that none of our titles will sell 3 million copies, but that doesn’t mean 3,000 people can’t be looking for exactly what we offer. We use the ebook format — an electronic book — essentially a pdf version of the book that you can read on your PC, laptop, iphone, ipad, or kindle. It’s extrememly low overhead for us, so we don’t have to worry about selling 10,000 copies in the first week. We don’t have to only pick titles that will appeal to everyone. And to us, that’s a very good thing.
It allows us to write such uber-super-crazy-niche titles like:
The one about using twitter in your travel planning
The other one about quitting your job so you can travel around the world (and how exactly to do that)
My personal favorite, the book about taking your career online so you’re 100% portable and can live and travel anywhere
Or even a guide to getting a job on a cruise ship, because, well it’s awesome
We have many, many more titles coming up, like:
Traveling with a baby
Surviving the India Railways
Kickass Travel Photography Tips
and so on…
So why do we make ebooks?
1. Because it makes it possible for us to bring you practical information that you actually need — not dumbed down, commercialized content aimed at the masses
2. It’s green
3. It’s cheaper for you (and us!)
4. It’s 100% portable (we like to travel too)
