In late February, 2011, a group of adventurous strangers gathered together in Mumbai with one goal – to circumnavigate India, hitting the furthest points West, North, East and South. 16 days, 1200+ kilometers, traveling almost 100% via the Indian railway.
This is my accounting of that trip, in all it’s fun and occasionally uncomfortable details.
Originally recounted on my blog at drewgilbert.com in “real time”, writing from the road, this book is broken into two parts. One part previous blog posts re-edited, with tons of previously unseen photos I was proud of at the time, but which didn’t fit into the blog at that point . The rest is new, informative posts about how you can plan your own Indian train adventure, what to expect in India, on the train, how to navigate the sketchy toilets, and a wrap up that I never got to do on the blog.
India is a phenomenal country, one that I was petrified of before arriving here, before taking a half a month to see more of it than I could have dreamed of. Once you come to understand it though, many people rightfully fall in love with the place. I did, and I hope that this comes through in this ebook, and I hope that I can help others who might be dreaming of seeing India that it is not only possible, but it is also more rewarding than I could have imagined.
I didn’t just survive the Indian railway, I thrived on it. As a tightly wound guy, I’m betting that if I can, you can too. We are so proud of the book, we are offering to let you read 10 of the 101 pages here.
That isn’t even the best parts of the book, I promise.
