Today is the first day of summer, and I’ve gotten a lot of book love for Mother Tongue since it came out, so I wanted take a moment to point share the love… so without further ado, here’s the list of books that have made it to my reading list for this summer: Who doesn’t love a good book in the summer? WELCOME TO THE GODDAMN ICE CUBE (July, 5th) My friend got her hands on an advance copy and called this a “brilliant feminist memoir and travel adventure story” Sold. THIS IS NOT MY BEAUTIFUL LIFE (available now) Pregnant, living at home at…

What do you talk about with a three and six-year-old as your traverse the southern rim of the Grand Canyon? Falling to your death. Apparently, quite a bit. You see, the Grand Canyon, if you haven’t been, is basically a massive gaping hole that could swallow you up with one misstep. Sure there are rails, but only at the lookout points. It’s not that I expected rails everywhere, or had any expectations at all even, it’s just when you’re walking the southern rim with two kids you suddenly realize: hey this is sort of insane. It’s so picturesque, the depths…

If there’s one lifestyle philosophy I prescribe to it’s something along the lines of “adventurist”. I just love it. Treat your life like a series of adventures and it solves almost all of your problems. 1. Bored? Don’t worry, it’s time for a new adventure. 2. Mess something up? Yeah but that’s part of the adventure. 3. Something bad happens? Adventure!! 4. Need a sense of accomplishment without having to dedicate your entire life to a cause? Adventures! Mini-goals! 5. Can’t get motivated? Well how about a big epic life adventure that makes your project not just a “to-do” but a…

It is so bizarre being back in the States. Not just for me either: for the kids. “Mama, come look at something cool. Look!” He pointed to a red fire hydrant outside the airport as we waited for the hotel shuttle. “Yes, cool! Do you know what it does?” “It sprays water.” Yup. Through the internet, our influence and luck, Drew and I have managed to raise two all-American children who have our American English accent (with a vaguely Northeast overtones) chock full of the same slang that 20-year-old gamers are using on YouTube. Things are epic in our house, dude. And…

I’m so excited. It’s a 1984 Volkswagen Westfalia, in excellent condition. It’s in New Mexico, so the guy is holding it for us for a few days as we sort things out here and then send Drew up to collect it. It’s got all the interior parts… the fridge, sink and stove… all working. It had a small patch of rust, but that’s been repaired, the engine has 174,000 original miles on it so definitely enough life to last us through the summer and it might need a new pop-up tent canvas and some new tires, but those are easy…

I woke up this morning, refreshed the Amazon page for my book, and like Christmas morning there it was: now available. It’s been a long journey to take this book from a scribbled idea in my notebook to getting it out on the shelves today. It’s here! It’s here! I feel so elated. I really hope you guys like it. I’ve been secretly balancing this project for years and it was not easy to write this blog while writing a parallel book, without overlapping stories. I am so thrilled that everyone finally gets to read it, I feel like someone who planned a…

“Once we get my iPad fixed, we’re going to get a van and go adventuring, right?” That was Cole, this morning. He’s been checking to make sure we’re NOT going anywhere until he gets his iPad fixed. We’re using a local shop as there are absolutely no Apple stores in Mexico – just certified Apple retailers and they have to have parts shipped in – so far it’s been a month. We’re getting ready to go, but we might be stuck here for a few more weeks. Meanwhile… THE VAN Okay, so last week I wrote about our search for the perfect Westfalia van. EVERYONE…

I just realized that the preview for my book is on Amazon. Well I didn’t realize it so much as someone said, “I read the excerpt and decided to buy!” I was like, wait, where? Kind of like that moment when you also see your book on Audible. WAIT. THAT’S MY BOOK. It’s on CD. Okay, I should tell people! EXCERPTS So yes, you can read the intro and chapter 1 of my book (plus the last chapter and end notes if you’re so inspired) at Amazon, if you click on the “Look Inside” button over the cover image. Then…

The plan is coming together. Drew has lobbied hard. I mean, it’s not entirely fair, I’m feeling super pregnant right now, somewhat woozy if I stand up too quickly, major pregnancy brain and he’s whispering things like, “and it’s good for the environment…” Drew wants to get a camper van. He’s been following #vanlife for years, and he’s the one who told me about Foster Huntington (who beyond making a coffee table book of camper vans – does other crazy things like BUILDS HIMSELF A TREEHOUSE TO LIVE IN). Drew has wanted this forever but I’ve been hesitant to purchase a vehicle…
