50 Shades of White

The photography contest that I’m judging is ending soon (you have until August 29th to enter, details here) and I’ve been thumbing through the Pinterest board that our host put together. They haven’t gotten all of the entries up, but so far there are 357 in my category (the color white). Here’s a small selection (not exhaustive) of the photos that stood out to me, and I’m really impressed with the quality. I’m completely daunted as to how to even begin to pick because the photos are so different — can you compare a wedding shot to a close up of a hermit crab? Is one better than the other?

I think I have to stand by what I wrote before the contest started, on what I was looking for: “I love photos that tell a story. I want something that could have only been taken by you, in that moment, in that way. I love it when a photo captures a place so well that even if I’ve been there before, I think to myself, wow, I have to go there.”

Still, it’s going to be really hard to choose.

If you were in my shoes, who would you pick to win? I can’t believe I get to give someone an iPad. Best job ever.

  1. Where else would you get a museum security guard in high heeled boots other than Italy –
Unique to the place, and the person’s eye who took the shot…
I think that makes me want to go there!

  2. They are all gorgeous, I don’t envy you your position. I think I have enjoyed this contest more than any other one I have ever seen because the submissions have been so incredibly beautiful to look at and learn about!

  3. Wow….thanks for including my picture in this post!! My friend Suyeon looked so stunning in that traditional Korean wedding dress.
Loved seeing what everyone else has submitted!! 🙂

  4. Ditto on the not bothering to enter, they are amazing. Love the last one, the portrait of the old man, and the first one of the child. Very tough decision you have on your hands.

  5. I would exclude most of the black and white shots. I think that’s a cop out for the “White” category because you could basically take any photo and just turn it into a black / white shot to make it “arty”. Sorry. Someone had to say it…

  6. Wow I’m so happy to be included among these amazing photographs/photographers! Thank you so much, you have just made my day! 😀

Bets of luck to everyone! 🙂
PS: pick me, pick me, pick me! 😛 haha

  7. Margaret

    Lake in Swedish Lapland
That one speaks to me the most.

  8. Ditto the lake shot. It made me look twice to “figure it out.” And I like that.

  9. Well done Arianwen. So exciting to get shortlisted! Your picture of the little girl is beautiful. Fingers crossed for you!

  10. Thanks for including me, I’m really flattered. The competition is so tough, I would never be able to choose from all these entries (and the hundreds of others that you have to choose from!). I also love the picture of the heeled boots.

I would second the previous comment about using a black/white picture. I think the winner should be a colour picture where white is the prominent feature. But that’s just my opinion 🙂

Can’t wait to see the results and the winning photo 🙂

  11. The reindeer! Or the very last one… with the solo girl in the pink hat. All very lovely though.

    Tough decision!

  12. One thing this contest has demonstrated is that there is no shortage of great photography talent in the travel blogging world 😀

  13. hummm every picture tells a story here and a express a very deep emotion….gr8 collection

  14. Great job definitely, but I don’t envy you having to choose ONE of these from such a great collection of entries!

  15. Enidmelanie

I love photo of the old man. It matches the topic perfectly and without any major editing.

  16. Danielle

I LOVE the photo of the elk pulling the sled in the snow. When would we normally get to see a view like this? Breathtaking and inspiring one to adventure simultaneously. Goodluck choosing! 🙂

  17. Clearly this was an extremely hard decision to make, Christine. I’m honored to be included here.
