Welcome to the Desert: Burning Man 2010

on 7-14-2010 in Around The World, Travel Documentary, United States

Man, writing 2010 reminded me – we’re in the future. Which actually leads me to the next part:

Are you a digital nomad? A traveler? Bound for The Burn? Want to meet up? The awesome travelers/digital nomads Cherie and Chris are running Camp Nomadia again this year at Burning Man. I’ll be there too, filming for the documentary (if our press pass is approved). Last year there were 70 folks who showed up for this camp, all like-minded people who are trying to make travel a full-time lifestyle and many of them working online in order to finance their trips (in other words, Digital Nomads, the subject of the documentary). So we’ll be there, doing interviews, filming and taking photos.  Even if you’re not a full-time traveler or digital nomad, we’d still love to meet you.

Burning Man 2010
Dates: August 30th – September 6th 2010
Location: Black Rock City, Nevada
Where to meet: Camp Nomadia
Cost: $300
Who will be there: Cherie and Chris from Technomadia.com, me (Christine Gilbert + fam from AlmostFearless.com) + at least 70 other travelers. Are you going? Leave your name/link in the comments!
More information: Official Camp Nomadia page

JoAnna Haugen from Kaleidoscopic Wandering attended last year and stayed at Camp Nomadia. She said of the experience:

“Every encounter, every conversation, every colorful vision around me left me excited about what the next moment might bring. Within 24 hours I made friends that far surpassed most relationships I’d made in high school. By mid-week I’d been convinced by a complete stranger to look at the world in ways I’d never even imagined. In an early morning walk across the playa, I was struck by the singular beauty of someone curled up, asleep at the base of a large rabbit sculpture. Even with unrestrained miles to cross, I discovered details that reflected the raw creations in Black Rock City. I spun in circles, entranced by the neon lights, carnival-like sounds and smell of organic dust. I stayed up all night and watched the sun welcome the desert like a tray of spilled watercolors. I discovered a wild array of emotions as I danced, smiled, laughed, cried and celebrated new beginnings.”

There are over 50,000 people at this event.  For the full Burning Man experience check out their official website.

  1. This is one of my major bucket list items. It looks AMAZING!! Open-minded, creative people, and the ability to be whoever you want to be, no matter how outlandish! Beautiful pictures, too.

  2. Gah – You ARE fearless! I live really close to Black Rock Desert, and I won’t go near it in the summer time. It is way, way, way TOO hot and dusty and remote for me. I’ve heard it’s an awesome event though, many times over, so have a great time! Are you taking your baby with you?

  3. Melissa-

Yes, baby is coming with us. It’s not common, but there are folks who do it. The key will be to take lots of naps, stay out of the high heat and stay hydrated.

    I know. It’s insane.

  4. Beautiful Photos! I’d love to be there this year. It is sure to be full of wonderful creative energy and great inspiration.

  5. Thanks for the shout out Christine! You’re going to have so much fun ~ I can’t wait to hear all about it!!

  6. We’re so excited to finally get to meet up.. and have you at Camp Nomadia!

For anyone considering camping with Camp Nomadia – please do make sure you read our info page noted above and join our Ning group. It’s where our camp does its planning so you’ll be in the know on how to find us, and we’ll know to try to hold space for you.

Anyone is welcome to stop by.. especially for one of our Nomadic Happy Hours, or our workshop on becoming nomadic.

    See you in the dust!

  7. Jealous, jealous, jealous!! I can’t wait to hear about it and can’t wait to one day go myself.

  8. Great pics. It looks like you have a blast and a real adventure.

  9. Cherie and Chris rock.

    see you there

  10. Hi Christine, this is brilliant, top pics and I do admire you for doing this with the baby. Great to see you’re not letting being a mum stand in the way of your dreams and good for you. A happy mum means a happy family:) Have fun. I have a friend who loves this event so I’ll send her this link. I’d love to come sometime myself and meet you:)

  11. I’ve talked about going to Burning Man for at least 10 years, but have never been able to make it. It’s kind of fallen off of my radar in recent years as I’m less into the whole counterculture scene anymore, but now that I think about it, there’s never really been a better time. It’s the first time in ages that I haven’t had a job tying me down. Yes, this might be just the push that I need to finally do it. Maybe I’ll see you there!

  12. Great to see you’re not letting being a mum stand in the way of your dreams and good for you.

    Thanks

  13. Wow! Awesome photos. I wish we could go. It doesn’t fit with our schedule this summer, but then again..after looking at this post, maybe it calls for a road trip?

  14. This is definitely near the top of my lifelong to-do-list! I can barely spend a day in the rare occasion the sun decides to shine here in Ireland, I doubt I’d survive a sojourn in the Nevada desert! But as soon as I grow a few extra layers of skin – I am there!!

  15. Really awesome pictures.. just looks like a captured by a professional photographer…. nice work!

  16. I will be there and will look for you at Nomad Camp. It sounds like the perfect inspiration to keep traveling, or nomading in some form.

  17. This is on my hit list of things to do before I die. Love the photo’s and can’t wait to check it out for myself one day……when my husband and I can find somewhere to deposit my two children for the weekend!

  18. Wish I could go this year… Burning Man is wicked and amazing! I have it on my list for next year.
