Free Book Friday: Crush It!

I can just picture Gary Vaynerchuk, author of Crush It! and member of the online elite, sitting around trying to think of a synonym for working really hard. Knock it out of the park! No, not quite. Kick ass! No, too vulgar. Show me what your mama gave ya! Wait, what was I doing? I know! Crush it!

Then he ran a marathon, did his taxes and gave his wife a pedicure.

This book is like liquid motivation. It’s small, quick to read and when you’re done you might finding yourself starting an online business, or getting super serious about the one you already have. The best part? It’s all good advice.

  • Have passion for what you do
  • Build a personal brand
  • Use the internet
  • Great content matters
  • Be yourself
  • Build a community

But the number one thing Gary preaches over and over again: Work hard. Hustle. Be your brand.

If you’ve been thinking about building an online business, this book is definitely for you. Or if you need a little motivation boost, a quick read of this book will have your head on straight in no time.

However, if you’re already working your butt off and love what you do, you probably don’t need this book. Gary’s enthusiasm might come across like a panting puppy that won’t stop orbiting around the room, barking out random catch phrases. If you’re looking for tips on how to take it to the next level, it might not be specific enough. If you’re already using Facebook and Twitter, creating the best content you can, using email lists to contact your community and generally promoting the heck out of yourself, then this book has nothing new (not really anyway).

Is that a bad thing? No. It’s the perfect book to get you off your butt. That’s completely enough. Consumer warning: when you’re done you might want to insert [crush it!] into way too many of your conversations. And your exclamation usage might go up!  Just sayin’.

  1. I’d never even heard of this guy until earlier tonight, when someone else on Twitter mentioned him. Then you did. Must be fate. I’d love to see what all the hype is about and everyone (myslef included) can use a kink in the pants now and then.

Gary has been able to sell wine tasting to America and gather up a lot of passion and motivation from his followers. He puts himself out there and engadges with his audience. I think his willingness to try and crush it in new ways has made him a great personality.

  3. This book looks great but I am too cheap/poor to buy it! The day to day of running a blog is starting to run me down and some new motivation would be excellent.

  4. I have only started watching his videos a few weeks ago, and he says a lot of simple but brilliant things about the way the world is working now. I need to absorb the book and pass it along to someone else.

I assumed the title was a bit of a double entendre meaning to work hard and crush it in business, but also a reference to his wine history (crushing grapes). I’ll go ask him. He answers everyone.

  9. Because everyone needs a bit of motivation. Especially people that are on their way to achieving their dreams, but still have some mountains to move and some hills to climb.

  10. So, who are you to say, it is not for the person who is already using Twitter, Facebook, etc.? I learn something every time I read a new book. Would love to have a free copy, so I can see what I can learn from someone else.

  11. I agree, it was a great book.

What I like about GaryVee is that he is 100% authentic. There is no B.S. Other hustlers try to sell dreams of easy riches with little work, but Gary is all about busting your ass.

He even says that it is unrealistic for most people to think they will be the next Oprah, but he also says that earning a good middle class income from your blog is reasonable if you work hard enough.

It was just motivation, I was also surprised to see all the practical advice on using online tools.

The books is definitely a good read and worth your time.

  12. Hmm…I need the book because I have this itch just between my shoulder blades which I can’t reach and I think that the book is exactly the right length to scratch it.

Nah, I’m only kidding. Although I have never read it I have heard some great reviews on the book. I am sure it is an excellent read.

  16. Sounds like a great book.

  17. Sounds pretty inspiring! I have heard great things about this book and would love to check it out!

  18. This book sounds great, and here is why I’d like a free copy:

My friend and favorite coworker is leaving in three weeks. He has decided to quit his job and move a bajillion miles away to the mountains to do what he loves: snowboard. Yes, he is going to be a snow-bum, but he is also enterprising. He has decided to start his own online business, supporting the environment which he is passionate about, support his artist friends, selling a product, and making passive income all at once. He has worked very hard, with help from his awesome friends, and is well on his way to success.

Every month or so he’s got a new book like this at work that he’s reading: the four hour work week, cubicle nation…and we discuss all the ways we can use the internet and our passions to make money doing something we enjoy and have more time to do what we love.

So I’d love a free copy not for myself, I plan on buying a copy, but for my friend, as a going away gift and wish of success on his entrepreneurship journey! Hopefully he doesn’t see this, although it would be funny.

Also, love your blog. I start reading it recently at the beginning of 30w30d, it’s very inspirational and helpful!

  19. I just finished Jonathon Field’s Career Renegade, and found it really practical and readable. I can only imagine that Vaynerchuk’s Crush It! would be the perfect sequel. When you are working in the trenches trying to launch your own business or website, it is sooo helpful hearing about other people’s struggles, successes, and advice. I hope I win!

  20. The book is really is really a liquid flow of motivation and the advices provided are really praisable

  21. I love your blog! I found it through the Redpath’s “From Here to Uncertainty” and had to subscribe…as for the contest – Thanks for offering up this book to your reading public.

This book sounds like what my podcast partner and I need! After 3 years and over 460 episodes, we’ve decided that this is the year we are going to make things happen (as in generate some income), but we just aren’t sure how to do it. Perhaps this book would give us some enlightenment, or give me a swift kick in the rear, since I’m the one that needs some motivation.

(And I’m also interested in hearing more about “The 4 hour work week” which is mentioned in a comment above. I’ve heard about on a podcast that I listen to but I haven’t had a chance to find it here in France…)

  22. I like great books and I cannot lie!

  23. I think Gary V is someone who basically tells it like it is. I haven’t read or seen too much about gary, but from the stuff I have seen from him I come away with the feeling I need to step it up if I want to “crush it”. I think he does a really good job in not only motivating individuals to start taking the appropriate action to accomplish one’s goals but he also does it in a manner most people can relate to. He comes across as honest and genuine as anyone could be.

I think someone who could use this book would be someone who sometimes needs a little kick in the butt and needs reminding how to truly chase one’s dreams and just crush it. I also think this book should go to someone who is a fan of Gary’s and who could truly benefit from his insights.

That person Christine, is me. I would not only appreciate the gesture, but also benefit from Gary’s experience and his message.

    Thank you,
    Richard
