Prediction: In 44 days I will still have nothing packed and will just open the door to my apartment and let strangers haul out whatever they want for free.
I haven’t packed. I have an apartment full of stuff, and I haven’t thrown anything out. I haven’t given anything away. I haven’t sold a thing. I have put things into piles. I have started using the office as the “yard sale room” and the living room as the “give to friends/family room”. I know I wrote about this two weeks ago, all cavalier, bragging about my decision making abilities. But that was two weeks ago– 60 days to spain. And let me tell you… that seems like forever when compared to 45 days.
Last night I had a dream that I was wading through piles of clothes and boxes in my apartment. I was swimming through six feet worth of possessions. In fact, it’s not entirely inaccurate. Last fall we sold our house and squeezed 2000 sq ft worth of possessions into our 1400 sq ft apartment. I don’t swim through stuff, but I do have to carefully navigate the debris I used to have three full size bookshelves packed with books, and yet there were stacks of books in the office, the dining room and next to my bed. We have 5 closets and every one is stuffed with clothes. I have 2 giant containers filled with work clothes that are out of season, and shoe racks on the back of most doors.
Now everything is in piles, waiting for their fates. I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed. How did I get all this stuff? And it seems like such a waste! We’ve actually stopped buying anything new in the past year, to save for the trip, and I’m still buried under this mountain of stuff.
Two questions:
1. I know you won’t feel sorry for me, but at least give me some tips on getting through this!
2. Do you want some stuff?

Answer 1: Just let it go. Open the door, invite people in, and let them make a donation. And then, by day 10, if it’s not all gone, start to panic. Open the door, invite people in, and let ‘em loot.
I’ve written something about this experience, too:
