Don’t Get Fired Before You Quit
I’ve had a serious case of senioritis at my job as of late. Plus with just 42 days until I give my 2-week notice, I’m beginning to skate dangerously close to blurting out my intentions to anyone who talks to me. “Christine, the client wants to do that on July 22nd” and all I can think is, “Great! I won’t be here so they can do whatever they want!” But I can’t say that, I have to stay professional and maintain some semblance of a work ethic. This is my new mantra.
I am particularly prone to senioritis. I will tell you one embarrassing story… in the spring of senior year of high school, I turned 18—which meant I could sign myself out of school, like a parent. I had already been accepted to two colleges and I had an extremely light schedule. Combine this with the fact, that as Yearbook Editor in Chief, I could write my own hall passes for myself and other students (probably the only benefit of taking on that job) and you have a recipe for disaster. I skipped so many classes that spring that I failed one class:
Gym class.
Yes, and it was a requirement for graduation. I had to take summer school for gym class. I was an honors student, AP classes, Yearbook Editor, Newspaper Editor, played sports all three seasons, and yet I would not walk for HS graduation. I missed passing by one class. Of course I have no one to blame but myself, and ultimately, it wasn’t that big of a deal (after you get past the crippling embarrassment) and in the fall I went to college like everyone else.
I am not letting that happen this time.
Although, I have to hope, that I’m slightly more disciplined than my 18-year-old self, I still wake up in the morning and contemplate not going back. Just rolling over, snuggling with the puppies and forgetting all about the job that just won’t end…
But then I think about Gym class and I have to redeem myself.
Ok I can’t be the only one with a senioritis story—what’s the worst thing you’ve done, because you just don’t care anymore?
